Oxford Drama – Fluctuations EP

When I wrote about Oxford Drama in May last year, it was obvious that this duo has the potential to reach a broader audience with their charming sound. And although this process may not have been happening as rapidly for them as in the case of The Dumplings, a fellow Polish wonderkids band, the pair did start to tour the country, support notable artists (Trust or Taylor McFerrin) and appear on the national radio stations. The fact that their fanbase has not been increased by tens of thousands of people has actually turned out to be a blessing as it allowed the intimacy in their music to remain untouched.

Now Gosia Dryjanska and Marcin Mrowka are back with a new EP called Fluctuations which is their first ever official release. It is out digitally on Brennnessel Records and bearing in mind that this label has been founded by the members of Kamp! and it gathers the most outstanding electronic music artists from Poland, this is exactly the place where they should be.

Zamilska – Duel 35

Last time I called her the princess of this genre but with a new song Zamilska proves that she is ready to become a queen and rule the empire of techno. Duel 35, a second single from her highly-anticipated upcoming debut album Untune, is once again a magnificent dark techno track heavily enriched with bass and accompanied by disturbing visuals set together by the artist herself.

The album will be released on the 26th of May and you can pre order it here or here.

Oxford Drama – Oxford Drama EP

Do you remember what fuss was caused by a discovery of Polish duo The Dumplings? OSOM was one of the very first sites to feature those talented youngsters at the end of September last year and now they are in the middle of the sold out tour, have been played by a London radio and are about to release their debut album on a major label.

But it turns out that Poland has even more to offer. Oxford Drama are a Wrocław-based fantastic boy/girl duo that deserves more recognition. Their first ever release – a self-titled EP – was published a month ago and in three of four tracks it presents a dreamy sound that reminds me of former songs from another great Polish band Őszibarack. But for me the absolute highlight of Oxford Drama EP is Endeavour, a composition less calming yet with amazing alternative beat. Can’t wait to hear what this guys will come up with next!

MIKROBI.T – Berlin

MIKROBI.T is the name of a Polish band whose members try to mix electronic music with the sound of jazz which may draw the obvious comparisons to Brandt Brauer Frick Ensemble or remixes of Hauschka’s work but do not let that fool you – the style of this Poznan-based collective proves to be really fresh. Their debut album called Binary Beats has been released last month and among others it features that one amazing song which particularly caught my attention. Its name is Berlin (which is enough to excite me) and it is a deadly catchy instrumental composition that I would classify as… jazzy techno? Does something like this even exist?

The Dumplings – Freeze

Freeze kicks off with an interesting electronic beat combined with chiptune sounds but just when you begin wondering whether this is another band trying in some way to imitate Crystal Castles, the vocal starts and you realize that The Dumplings are something completely different. The voice is sweet and deep rather than harsh which makes the track a lovely electronic pop composition and not a kitsch copy of someone else’s style.

It is getting even better while looking for the information about the band. It turns out that The Dumplings consists of two teenagers: Justyna Święs (16) and Jakub Karaś (17) from Zabrze, a city situated in the industrial part of Poland called Silesia, but what has struck me the most is the amount of music they have already recorded. Their SoundCloud account is full of ready tracks with diverse sound and climate which quite surprisingly makes the duo ready to release the debut album! And when that happens, The Dumplings will go really far.
