Bobby Womack – The Bravest Man in the Universe

We do have a lot of Damon Albarn stuff here but here comes yet another proof why.

It is Bobby Womack‘s album called The Bravest Man in the Universe, produced by a duo composed of geniuses – Albarn himself (needs no introduction) and Richard Russell (owner of XL Recordings which was responsible for the releases from Adele, The xx or Radiohead).

Womack has started his collaboration with Albarn two years ago with the release of the successful Gorillaz album Plastic Beach (Bobby is featured in two songs: Stylo and Cloud of Unknowing). The now 68 year old singer appears also in the next album – The Fall (in the track Bobby in Phoenix). The cooperation went well so they decided to go on and work on the full length album.

The Bravest Man in the Universe  is first Womack’s release in 12 years and first original material in 18 years! It brings classic soul but adjusted to the 21st century standards  – this is probably that ‘golden touch’ of Albarn-Russel duo. When you look into the tracklist, the obvious attention is drawn by the guest appearance from Lana ‘Pumped Up Lips‘ Del Rey but you should also check out Fatoumata Diawara in Nothin’ Can Save Ya.

They’re famous. But… #6 Damon Albarn

Ladies and gentlemen, the legend is here – Damon Albarn! Of course we all know him from Blur and Gorillaz but he is also the man behind many other interesting projects. It is impossible to present them all so I will only focus on the three latest.

DRC Music

This is not the first Damon Albarn’s African collaboration – in 2002 he released album Mali Music. Last year, however, his destination was Democratic Republic of the Congo where – during five days – he created Kinshasa One Two under the name DRC Music. The band is actually a group of producers (including the names like Kwes, Actress or Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs) and the album was recorded with the help of many Congolese musicians.

Rocket Juice & the Moon

Rocket Juice & the Moon is a supergroup consisting of Albarn, Flea (bassist of Red Hot Chili Peppers) and Tony Allen (by some considered the best drummer ever) and formed in 2008. However, we had to wait for their first album until March this year. It includes 18 tracks and features guest appearances by M.anifest, Erykah Badu, Hypnotic Brass Ensemble and more.

Dr Dee – An English Opera

This is the latest release from Damon Albarn and probably the weirdest (at least for those of you who are not familiar with his other operas).

Dr Dee is a soundtrack album of Dr Dee – An English Opera and is one of the few positions in Albarn’s discography that were released under his real name.
