We do have a lot of Damon Albarn stuff here but here comes yet another proof why.
It is Bobby Womack‘s album called The Bravest Man in the Universe, produced by a duo composed of geniuses – Albarn himself (needs no introduction) and Richard Russell (owner of XL Recordings which was responsible for the releases from Adele, The xx or Radiohead).
Womack has started his collaboration with Albarn two years ago with the release of the successful Gorillaz album Plastic Beach (Bobby is featured in two songs: Stylo and Cloud of Unknowing). The now 68 year old singer appears also in the next album – The Fall (in the track Bobby in Phoenix). The cooperation went well so they decided to go on and work on the full length album.
The Bravest Man in the Universe is first Womack’s release in 12 years and first original material in 18 years! It brings classic soul but adjusted to the 21st century standards – this is probably that ‘golden touch’ of Albarn-Russel duo. When you look into the tracklist, the obvious attention is drawn by the guest appearance from Lana ‘Pumped Up Lips‘ Del Rey but you should also check out Fatoumata Diawara in Nothin’ Can Save Ya.
